Success Strategies for Phase 1

  There are a few methods of note taking.


The Outline Method

  • Simplest approach and most familiar method
  • Can organize material in a structured and logical way                         
  • Can be used to to define terms and make lists
  • Consider using this method for objectives starting with "Define...," "List..."


The Charting Method

  • Uses charts to condense and organize notes 
  • Includes splitting information into columns and rows which are then filled with summaries of information (Think of your notes as an Excel or Google sheet)
  • A visual way that lets you see connections between ideas
  • Consider using this method for objectives starting with "Compare and contract...," "Differentiate between..."


The Mapping Method

  • Visualizes connections between large amounts of information 
  • Offers a way for you to write down everything you know about a topic without writing out full paragraphs
  • A visual way that lets you describe or explain a process and more
  • Consider using this method for objectives starting with "Describe...," "Explain the process..."


The Flashcard Method

  • Helps you define terms
  • Consider using this method for objectives starting with "Define..."


The Cornell Method

  • Helps you take notes, condense key ideas, and organize your study notes in one place
  • Consider using this method for objectives starting with "Summarize..."
