Springer Nature & Lyrasis Open Access Publishing Guide

Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine (HMSOM) is a participating institution in the transformative open access (OA) agreement between Springer Nature and LYRASIS, a nonprofit membership organization that provides libraries, archives, and museums with access to scholarly publishing initiatives.

This agreement allows corresponding authors affiliated with participating institutions, including HMSOM, to publish their research open access in eligible Springer Nature hybrid journals at no cost to themselves. The Article Processing Charges (APCs) are covered centrally through the agreement—there is no need for authors to seek funding or pay individually.

The primary goals of this agreement are to:

  • Increase access to high-quality research by making articles freely available to readers worldwide.

  • Support equity in scholarly communication, with a particular emphasis on including historically underrepresented institutions.

  • Reduce the financial and administrative burden on individual researchers by streamlining the OA publishing process.

This initiative is part of Springer Nature’s commitment to making open science more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.

Eligibility Criteria

To benefit from the Springer Nature–LYRASIS open access agreement, authors must meet several criteria related to their institutional affiliation, article type, and journal selection. Here's a breakdown of what’s required:

1. Corresponding Author Affiliation

The author listed as the corresponding author on the manuscript must be affiliated with a participating institution at the time of article acceptance.

  • This includes faculty, researchers, postdocs, and students at HMSOM.

  • Institutional affiliation is typically verified through the email domain used during submission and/or the affiliation stated in the manuscript metadata.

2. Eligible Article Types

The agreement covers specific categories of scholarly output. To qualify, your article must fall into one of the following types:

  • Original Research Articles

  • Review Articles

  • Brief Communications

  • Continuing Education Articles

Note: Editorials, commentaries, conference abstracts, and similar content types are not covered under this agreement.

3. Eligible Journals

Only articles accepted in Springer Nature hybrid journals are eligible under this agreement. These are subscription journals that offer an open access publishing option (also known as the “Open Choice” model).

  • A searchable list of eligible journals is maintained on the Springer Nature website.

  • The flagship journal Nature and BMC journals are not included in the agreement.

4. Approval Process

Once your article is accepted:

  • Springer Nature will identify you as potentially eligible based on your provided institutional details.

  • You’ll be prompted to confirm your affiliation.

  • The request is then routed to an OA approval manager at your institution for final eligibility verification.

  • If approved, your article will be published open access under a Creative Commons license, without any cost to you.
