Name: Daniel Silverstein (he/him)
Bio: Daniel is a medical student at HMSOM. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Connecticut where he also conducted research in a microbiology lab. During this time, his passion for photography melded with his love for seeing the unseen world through microscopy. He began conducting photographic studies on the dynamics of histological staining dyes through various media. He found that the interactions between stains and media make patterns that show distinctive characteristics through an unconventional viewpoint. This submission showcases parts of this exploration.

Description/explanation of the work: Since college, photography has been one of my favorite pastimes and a way for me to display my creative side. Name: Mason Henrich (he/him)
Cohort: 2022
Hometown: Alamo, CA
Description/explanation of the work: As a photographer for Moment by Moment Photography, a non-profit organization that provides free photography sessions to the families of children with potentially life-limiting diseases and disorders, I have had the honor of witnessing and documenting many firsts in these families’ lives, from first birthdays to first baptisms and first days of school. Most firsts were planned moments that I was scheduled to be a part of. However, on rare occasions, I have been lucky enough to capture candid firsts, including a very special moment with this family in which, together, we watched their daughter take her first steps outside of UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital. I think it is no coincidence that her steps took her away from the hospital building that she had spent most of her young life being treated at. Her steps confidently demonstrated her determination to overcome the challenges that stood inside the doors behind her. In these images, hesitancy is nowhere to be seen, and instead, her courage is on display as her fear went walking.
